Common Digestive Conditions

How to Investigate Gut Symptoms

If you suffer with ongoing digestive symptoms, we strongly recommend that you make an appointment with your GP / Family Doctor to discuss your symptoms. You should not self-diagnose. A doctor can carry out some simple blood or stool tests to check for a number of conditions such as coeliac disease, infections or inflammation in your digestive system (such as Crohn’s disease or Ulcerative colitis).

If your doctor feels that you require further tests they may refer you to a gastroenterologist / digestive specialist. Further tests might include endoscopic procedures (a colonoscopy or gastroscopy) or some scans. Alternatively, if your doctor is happy with the results of the tests, they may recommend that you see a dietitian or instigate some simple changes to your diet / lifestyle or prescribe you with some medication.
